On a positive note, we came back with a flexi-shaft for the dremel, so hopefully from now on I can carve horns withoug taking gouges out of my hand when I drop the heavy thing!

Flex shafts are the best. They're so much easier to use. I have a Foredom Flex-shaft rather then a Dremel & I use it all the time for my metal. (Dremels aren't really designed to handle working in metal & can get burned up quickly)
