To Freyja

Freyja, Vanadis, winner of Brisingamen,
mistress of Folkvang, hostess of battle-slain,
beloved of Ottar, bride of Od, free-hearted goddess,
friend of all lovers, granter of our darkest wishes,
for your blessings, countless, ceaseless, I thank you.
You inspire us to love, you kindle desire
in every heart, you persuade and provoke us
toward passions tender and savage, sublime
and destructive, transcendent and debased.
You set us into motion, pushing us toward
will and resolve, you move us to action,
you show us the vanity of indecision,
the folly of hesitation, the sorrow
of the missed chance. Freyja, glorious goddess,
you reach into our small sharp hidden places,
discovering our most secret fears, making them real,
exposing love's fragility, uncertainty,
necessity, its substance and its rarity.
You tear at wisps of ego, driving us to seek
within for what is firmly rooted. Golden-teared one,
destroyer of illusion, holder of hearts,
you goad us to take the next step, the first step,
you soothe us with love's treasures, you inflame us
with love's unreason, you hold us steady, Freyja,
as we walk between the paths of head and heart.
