I made it through the night in bed last night (no more comfortable than the couch, also no less) and was not evicted, so I guess I can stay :). I really think the coughing has lessened. Still sleeping a lot. Still can't seem to get my lungs full of air but I imagine that will pass as well.

I hung a Thor's hammer in my car this afternoon, have not yet poured out a bottle.

Today I'm working my way through the soul complex discussion in Coulter's Germanic Heathenry. I'm still hoping to find something clear (the discussion in the new Our Troth was iffy in that respect--althouh nice that they had sections on the Anglo-Saxon and the Norse views) and coherent. I'd be happier still if I had good original sources for this stuff.

I don't think there are original sources--people are inferring from the use of words that likely apply as much to mood as to parts of the soul. However, I believe this line of inquiry started with Edred's Book of Troth, and there is a rather different version somewhere on the Ealdriht site--which Hjuka and the Our Troth discussion have both undoubtedly made use of, so it's no disaster if it's vanished in the revision of that site into Miercinga Rice.

Other than the fact the Norse seem to have over-generalized the concept of the hamingja and the Anglo-Saxons the concept of the fetch, I think the Norse/A-S difference here is really more a matter of the difference between Edred's view and Swain's view :-) OTOH Hjuka may have come up with yet a third genuinely different view? I haven't read his book.

I'm actually not seeing a whole lot of differences between one book and another, other than those between the AS and Norse ones. Differences in emphasis but not in structure, mainly. I still need to look over Book of Troth and Hammer of the Gods.

So all of this is essentially non-lore-based? Heh, I have to admit I was hoping there'd be something clearer in older sources, but it's not terribly disappointing. There are plenty of instances where folks swear that such-and-such is the way it was, but when you look at the root source of their info there's a lot of interpretation involved.
