We had our May Day blot to Freyja today. Although we've also done a Maypole for years, this year it was so damned cold and windy that we decided to have our Maypole as a part of our Midsummer celebrations instead. (Probably more culturally appropriate anyway!) It just doesn't seem like May Day when it's below freezing... At least it had stopped snowing. Although we're due more tonight.

We used a bottle of Polish mead that Dan picked up a while back, not bad and we will probably never locate it again :). Mead is easier to find now than it used to be (I remember the first time I came across a bottle of mead in a store--I don't remember the brand, which is probably just as well since it was pretty much honey diluted with white wine :)) but it's still not a common thing, and we tend to stock up when we are around it (trips through Wisconsin tend to detour to White Winter, for example).

Michigan's Upper Peninsula :).

Today it was much nicer out, the kids were outside playing all day. ('Course they did that yesterday as well, they don't seem to mind the cold. :))

Amazing the difference a few hundred miles can make I guess. May is like the first month of summer here for all intents and purposes. That reminds, our UU Beltane is com,ing up next Sunday. Going to be scary.

Well, we supposedly have summer starting in June but generally it's late June before you'd really call it that.

So why is the UU beltane scary? :)

Back in college I read that back in the Middle Ages in Western Europe summer was reckoned as May, June and July, Autumn as August, September and October, Winter as November, December and January and Spring as February, April and March. For Alabama this actually fits.

As for why the Beltane festivities are going to be scary, we have people in their 70's whose never did a May pole before. Forget encouraging fertility, we'll settle for warding off broken hips :-)

Well, you'd think we'd be used to it--but a lot of years we really luck out and have weather where we can at least run out, do the Maypole, and run back in again. This year even that wasn't an option.

Have you thought about adjusting the date you mark May Day to one more applicable to your climate? Maybe "August Day?" ;)

Polish mead. I would like to try that sometime.... too bad you don't know where to locate it. I'll have to keep my eyes open for it.
