9/11, I mean. I knew it was coming. Even if I hadn't had a calendar I would have known it from the programming on television. But I spent most of yesterday thinking it was the 10th.

Which I felt kind of bad about--because the 11th is my mom's birthday. Sorry, but that's what 9/11 has always meant to me, and it will continue to be the first thing I think of. Maybe I'm lucky that way. So I went to get her a present.

My life was as unaffected by 9/11 as anyone's could be, I think. I live nowhere near any of the sites; I don't know anyone personally who was killed; I don't think I know anyone personally who knew anyone who was killed. I don't fly. I don't even go into cities often (a preference that long predates 9/11). The only thing I can think of is that now my daughter's school has, in addition to fire drills, terrorism drills. (And that may have been a result of Columbine as easily as of 9/11.) Kind of creepy, isn't it?

I did spend a lot of time in front of the television two years ago--I'm not usually a news junkie, but that seemed to call for it. And then I stopped. That was two years ago, though. Why would I want to see it again now?
