Confusion

Last night I picked up a two-liter of what I thought was Caffeine-Free Coke. (I'm not totally off the caffeine these days, but I do try to keep it to a minimum.) Turns out it was Caffeine-Free Diet Coke. The really weird part is that I didn't notice until elder daughter looked at the bottle. I had finished most of a glass by then--granted, over ice so a bit diluted, and was eating chips and salsa, so my sense of taste may have been off. As I found out today, on its own, not so great. But still, way better than diet pop used to be. What the heck happened?

Doesn't mean I'll be buying it from now on--it still doesn't taste good. And I don't want to give the kids Nutrasweet. But someone at Coca-Cola is apparently on the road to solving the diet-pop-tastes-nasty issue. And diet pop that only somewhat sucks? That's against nature.

I have never been a fan of caffeinated sodas. I stick with root beer and sprite. But, I went to diet root beer this summer and now I can't drink the normal stuff. I love the diet stuff, which is fantastic for me and my dieting.

I tend to go off caffeine altogether every so often because it makes me jittery, but then I'll need to keep awake for something and there's nothing better than caffeine for that. But I don't drink it exclusively, like I did when I was in college.

As for the diet/non-diet, it's partly a taste issue, partly that I don't trust the chemical sweeteners, particularly for my kids. I know what sugar does! :)

We drink the cheap-o brand of diet cola and normal soda tastes strange to us.

We get whatever's on sale that week, usually, and for most things store brand is about the same as name brand, flavor-wise. (That's true of just about everything, actually, which is nice. :))

Unfortunately the store brands don't typically offer decaf non-diet cola, so getting it (when Coke of Pepsi are on sale) is a treat.

BTW Diet Coke now has Splenda in it, not Nutrasweet. I imagine you're not a fan of either and this might be six of one and half a dozen of the other, but in any case, thought i'd mention it.

Hm, the bottle said aspartame, isn't that Nutrasweet? (Maybe it depends on the bottler?) But yeah, I'm not going to be seeking out Splenda either. I know a lot of people who swear by it for baking and so forth, though.
