A box of fireplace matches. A box of boxes, actually. Now I can do my devotions without burning my fingertips--without having to keep an eye on the match, how close is the flame, can I get another candle lit before it burns me.. I can even add more candles now if I like. Yay!

(Sometimes I am so easy to make happy that it's almost pathetic, LOL!)

*laughs* It sounds irreverent, but when I go to light candles, I make it a bit of a game.

I light all the candles with the same match, every time. If I don't, I have to start over.

I've only got the nine on my altar right now, but that's just pushing it for the matches I use. I've got a couple of first degree burns trying to push it.

*grins* I'd probably save my fingers using fireplace matches, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun :)

I have never managed to do all the candles on my large Hellenic altar with one match; I've managed to do it on Aphrodite's altar a few times, though. They each have seven candles including one big pillar on each with a sort of "well" in the center (that's the trouble candle, takes a while to light a wick in a hole!). The in-progress Norse altar will have two candles, I think; that's the current plan, at least, so I can probably use standard matches there safely :).

They make bic lighters now with really long ends, and an easy to use "trigger" device. Most people use them to light grills, but they come in handy for altar candles too. :-)

We used to use those, and probably still have one around somewhere, but I don't really like them. There's something about using a match, with the flame resting delicately on the end, that tells me something special is happening. I didn't get that feeling with the lighters. Just a me thing, no doubt :).

They do work really well, though, and if I were doing an outdoor ritual I would certainly use one!

Matches make all the difference! I've just downsized from big 'un matches to the regular size ... and it's a little hard trying to light a candle to Hestia when you are burning your fingers, swearing, dropping the match and blackening the carpet.

I could just buy a new box of big matches ... but that would be too easy ...

Heh. I had to order mine online, nowhere around here seems to carry them. So I ordered twelve boxes :).
